DESCRIPTION

This is an oil on canvas by Sidney Riesenberg, an American artist from Chicago who moved to Yonkers in New York and became noted as an illustrator for book covers and posters that encouraged Americans to support the war effort. He illustrated magazines and books much in the style of Zane Grey and was one of the greatest illustrators of the World War I era.
The painting here is entitled “Bearskin Neck”, which is located in Rockport, Mass., and it depicts a festive city street scene in Rockport. It is signed and dated “1963” on the lower left, so this was done near the end of his life.
The overall size is 18 3/4 x 24 7/8 in. wide and the sight size is 16 1/2 x 23 3/4 in. wide. Provenance: the Hirsch estate.
